Words of Welcome

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 2012 meeting of the Bárány Society. This is the 27th meeting since our Society was founded, and the ninth time we convene here in Uppsala.

On this occasion the Bárány Society is holding its meeting at the new Uppsala Concert & Congress Hall Building. During the meeting the Robert Bárány Jubelee Medal will be awarded. The Bárány gold medal dates back to an international fund to which contributions were donated in honour of Bárány's 60th birthday, in 1936. Regrettably, however, Bárány died shortly before his birthday and it was then decided that the fund should be used to defray the costs of striking a medal in gold and bearing the likeness and name of Robert Bárány. This medal was intended to be awarded by the Medical Faculty of Uppsala University to the scientist who, during the preceding five-year period is deemed to have published the most valuable work on the vestibular system in its widest sense.

Incidentally, the regulations governing the award have recently been amended slightly to bring them in line with the rules of the Bárány society, which stipulate a meeting every second year.

I welcome all of you to Uppsala and trust that together we shall succeed in promoting important contributions to our research field.
